What Kind of Stories Do You Publish?
Southern Fried Weirdness looks for original stories, poems, and nonfiction articles which somehow manage to encapsulate the title of the publication. Typically, I am looking for stories which combine
speculative elements with the tone and feel of
Southern literature. I will consider, and occassionly publish, speculative and weird stories from all around the world, but these stories will have a harder time finding acceptance than stories in the subgenre which is this publication's namesake.
How Should I Submit My Work?
To submit, please send your story/poem/article in the following format within the body of an email to
southernfriedweirdness@gmail.com. I do not need a cover letter or author biography.
Your Name
Address
Email
Word Count (word processor word count is fine)
Title
Byline (if different than your name)
And then please include the text of your story in your email. Please do not use indentions. Keep it single-spaced, but skip a space between paragraphs.
I will also accept snail-mailed submissions in standard manuscript format sent to:
Southern Fried Weirdness Press
P.O. Box 1368
Alabaster, AL 35007
Please include a SASE for my response.
What Rights Do You Buy?
I buy nonexclusive electronic rights to publish your story on the website, and nonexclusive one-time print rights to include the story in an annual print anthology. Your work will be archived on the website for one year after publication. Feel free to publish your story elsewhere -- in fact, it is encouraged. However, if first published by Southern Fried Weirdness, as a courtesy, please note that it was published here first.
Do You Accept Reprints?
Yes, as long as you retain all rights to your work. Please indicate that it is a reprint in your submission, and include a publication history.
How Do You Feel About Multiple Submissions? Simultaneous Submissions?
Multiple Submissions: Bad! Please send one story at a time.
Simultaneous Submissions: These are fine with me. All I ask is you be prompt in letting me know if your story is accepted for publication elsewhere.
Okay, the Nitty-Gritty...What Do You Pay?
For stories 2,000-5,000 words: $10
For stories 800-2,000 words: $5
For stories under 800 words: $1
Poetry: $1 (*exception* poets who tend towards epic -- over 75 lines -- while fitting the theme would be paid $5 for the poem)
Non-Ficiton: $1 per non-fiction article. I am looking for reviews (100-600 words) of books, music, art, movies, etc., which relate to the theme of this publication. I am also looking for short (300-800 word) non-ficition articles concerning true-life Southern Fried Weirdness.
Hopefully, these payment rates will grow in time. To help in this regard, please support Southern Fried Weirdness by purchasing copies of our print anthologies or items from our Cafe Press storefront.
Please note that by submitting here you are agreeing to the above terms. A more detailed contract can be expected prior to publication of your story. All payments will be made via PayPal upon publication. No other payment arrangement is currently available.
